The
participants at the Round Table for the Establishment
of a Technical Cooperation Network among Plant Biotechnology
Laboratories, held at the FAO Regional Office for Latin
America and the Caribbean at Santiago, Chile, in November
1990, with the participation of plant breeders, plant
physiologists, plant pathologists, molecular biologist
and experts in plant biotechnology from Argentina, Brazil,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico,
Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela and the international
centers ClAT, IPC, IBPGR, agencies IICA, CAF and the
Federation of Biotechnology Enterprises (FELAEB), considering
the official requests made to FAO by the governments
of Costa Rica, Colombia and Chile, agreed to establish
a technical cooperation network among plant biotechnology
laboratories of the Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The name adopted for the Network was:
"Technical
Cooperation Network on Plant Biotechnology in Latin
American and the Caribbean (REDBIO)".
REDBIO started its activities at December, 1990.
